To become an enduring resource for all who are affected by stroke in any way and who require assistance, advice, encouragement or compassion in coping with the adverse effects of stroke.

Chairman of the Board – Abe Schwartz
Born March 26, 1946. Raised in Montreal, B.A. from Sir George Williams University, 1968. MLS from McGill University, 1971. Worked at The National Library of Canada, Corrections Canada, Dept. of Foreign Affairs, CRTC and the Gloucester Public Library.
Abe had a heamorragic stroke in 2000, a TIA in 2009 and an ischemic stroke in 2010. He became the Chairman of the Board of the newly formed Stroke Survivors Association of Ottawa in 2005 and has served in that capacity since then,except for a one year period between 2009 and 2010. Abe is also a member of the Seniors’ Transportation Committee of The Council On Aging; the Citizen’s Council on Drugs of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long term Care; and, the Patient and Family Advisory Council of the Vascular Coalition.
Vice Chairman – Michael McTaggart
Michael’s professional interest is focused on leadership roles responsible for growth and corporate wealth. Michael has developed a broad knowledge of the IT, Public, Industrial, telecommunication and Not-For-Profit sectors that enables him to be conversant with business partners, clients, senior executives and employees.
Specialties: Business Management, Consulting Services, Project/Program Management, Business Development, Delivery Management, Leadership, Strategic Planning, Product Commercialization. Caregiver of Stroke Survivor.

Retired school principal. Member of SSA since 2005. Care giver for husband since stroke in 2005. Past chairman of 2011 SSA benefit dinner. Enjoys being volunteer for SSA, participating in activities with the six grandkids and travelling.
Director – Jim Lumsden, MPA – CRSN Director
Jim graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a B.Sc. in Physical Therapy, and Queen’s University with a Master of Public Administration. He worked for Alberta Health Services in the Neurosciences program at the University of Alberta Hospital as well as in the Regional Costing and Benchmarking Department. During his tenure as the Champlain Regional Stroke Network Director our region has: reduced TPA door-to-needle times by 50%, established a regional stroke prevention system, and implemented a regional hyper-acute stroke care system. These improvements ensure that all residents of the Champlain region live within 1.5 hours of a centre that can provide high quality stroke prevention care and the TPA clot busting drug. Jim has also made substantial contributions to the development of the Ontario Stroke System’s governance structure, the creation of the Ontario Telestroke System, and the Ontario Stroke Network Evaluation Office which publishes the annual Ontario Stroke Report Card and the Ontario Stroke Evaluation Report.
