Stroke Survivors Association Of Ottawa Is A Community Association That Supports Those Who Are Affected By Stroke Through Community Re-Engagement, Education and Advocacy

Our Vision

To become an enduring resource in Ottawa for all who are affected by stroke in any way and who require assistance, advice, encouragement or compassion in coping with the adverse effects

Our Role

Community Support

SSAO fulfills the last link of the stroke continuum; providing post-stroke community support for survivors and care partners. With the support of our many partners SSAO provides survivors and caregivers with hope, education, navigation and supports to maximize their potential

Connections

The first of its kind in Canada, Connections is a coordinated education and support program for those new to stroke. With the support of Ottawa area Hospitals and in collaboration with the stroke community of Ottawa, SSAO provides critical and timely introduction to Ottawa's stroke community and supports

Education

Survivor, care partner and family education is critical to a successful recovery. SSAO provides stroke, chronic condition management and care partner education to its members and the public. As well, SSAO provides information updates through its members meetings, website and monthly newsletter

Peer Support

SSAO provides stroke survivors, families and care partners with individual programs that range from simply answering questions and providing information, to providing referrals to health care or community resources, to assisting in community re-engagement and monthly peer support meetings. Community Partnerships

SSAO is an active member of many community integration initiatives and levers these networks into new programs, services, and knowledge sharing for its members and partners.  Our partnerships are constantly growing, both in the national capital region and across Canada.  SSAO boasts a strong and growing membership and a volunteer network that support our growing community-based programs

Advocacy

SSAO is an advocate for improved services and more research into every aspect of stroke prevention and acute care treatment, but more importantly in the areas of rehabilitation and improved quality of life for people with disabilities.  SSAO pursues links with health care professionals, government agencies, not for profit organizations and other advocacy groups to expand our message and raise awareness about stroke
