What is a stroke?
Part of the brain does not receive oxygen because the blood vessel that is carrying the oxygen rich blood is either blocked or has burst. There are two main types of stroke from a blockage (ischemic) or a bleeding or burst artery (hemorrhagic)
Every stroke is different!
The cause (pathogenesis) , development, effects and management of primary hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke are different
- Stroke is really a syndrome, the outcome depends on the part of the brain that is damaged
- Each person’s brain is slightly different!
Go To The Hospital! Don’t Wait!
If you or someone you know are showing these signs then Act F.A.S.T.
F = Face - Ask the survivor to smile, does one side of his or her face droop?
A = Arm - Ask the survivor to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S = Speech - Ask the survivor to repeat a simple sentence. Is his or her voice slurred or are words mixed?
T = Time - If the survivor has even one of these symptoms then Act FAST!
Call 9-1-1immediately and get emergency assistance. It is imperative to get medical treatment as quickly as possible. Evidence has proven that immediate diagnosis and treatment greatly reduce the risk and improves long term recovery!
